I wouldn't worry if I was you, I travel to Bali on my own or with my children, i have traveled a few times with just my 6 year old daughter as well and I have never had any problems except for when I take my extra cigarettes, which I know now how to pay to keep them with out any hassles. Besides that I alway's got extra attention when travelling with my kids as the Balinese love kids..
I so hope what you have been told doesen't make you cancel your holiday...
