sound like the go for you. You can activate them anytime, anywhere for instant heat without having to heat them first! You can later revert them back into their original form to be reactivated to re-use over & over again. You could take a few with you in your hand luggage - no need to find a heat source on the plane.
Do a google search on instant heat packs, or go to the link I left you on BCF.

You could also discuss the use of Valium with your GP, if you don't already take it. It can help relax muscle spasms, thus reduce pain, reduce anxiety & help you sleep - a pretty good combo to help cope with pain during a long flight. Worth considering.
