I have holidayed in Bali several times, and our first time we stayed at Jimbaran Bay (Intercontinental) which was great. Nusa Dua is a more sterile Bali than say Legian or even Jimbaran. It is lovely, please do get me wrong, but it is a good way from Legian/Seminyak etc where there is a lot of shopping and restaurants. I have not stayed in Nusa Dua at all but have spent the day. I think from for a first visit you will thoroughly enjoy it, but do venture out to Legian, Seminyak, Sanur and Ubud to see more of Bali, hire a driver for the day or a couple of days and see more of the countryside. In October we did a down hill bike ride which was fantastic, 45ks but did not seem that far - our 10yo boy could cope, but he is pretty sporty.
