that the exception to what Merrilau has written is when fever or bloody diarrhea is present, in which case anti-motility agents such as immodium should not be given, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Their website says, in part, "In several studies, antimotility agents have been useful in treating travelers' diarrhea by decreasing the duration of diarrhea. However, these agents should not be used by travelers with fever or bloody diarrhea, because they can increase the severity of disease by delaying clearance of causative organisms. Because antimotility agents are now available over the counter, their injudicious use is of concern. Adverse complications (toxic megacolon, sepsis, and disseminated intravascular coagulation) have been reported as a result of using these medications to treat diarrhea."

(The CDC website has plenty of info about a wide range of diseases occurring all over the world and can be very useful to travelers).
