They all charge or don't charge differently. I've heard of charges ranging from $3-6 per withdrawal, but the credit union I'm with charges nothing at all.

ATMs are safe - you just need to be aware that your card isn't spit out of the machine until the very last moment - after spitting out your money and asking if you want another withdrawal. It's a bit different to the way they work at home and can be easy to walk away with your card still in the machine if you're in a rush. You'll find some people hanging around ATMs just waiting for this to happen and they will clean out your account. Happened to a girl staying opposite me on my last trip - they got $7000 out of her account before it ran dry and it was less than half an hour from her using the ATM to realising she'd left the card and finding out the account was empty.

Always take your time and don't get distracted when using ATMs (best not to have kids in the booth with you, etc). Don't walk away from the screen until your money AND card are both safely tucked away in the wallet - and all's well.
