Last Year they sent my brother and sister in law to the "office" and wanted extra money for the excess. The airport officials showed them that their tickets said 20kg not 25 kgs. Australian Garuda had told them that they could bring 25 kilos back each but from the other end , it was a different story! However having said that, the lady in front of them had 31 kilos and nothing happened. She spoke to my brother on the plane and was surprised that he had been delayed because of this. Any way the end result---- my brother didn't ;ppay the excess- my sister in law "absolutely went off" I was somewhat embarrased at the time. She told them that Australian Garuda said 20 kilos but would allow 25 kilos each, that she had no cash and no credit card and this was her first time to Bali and had come to visit even after the bombs. They were sent to another room where the staff said don't worry- just be happy. No charge for you today. I am not saying that this will always work, but they were lucky when it happened to them.
I also went through a similar experience with Qantas last year and was lucky to escape the excess fee, but I will not take the risk again. The stress caused, was not worth it and put a damper on the holiday. I am not going to go as crazy shopping this year(well just the 20 kilos each)- I just want to visit the magic Isand and help out some of my dearest friends.
