no not essential unless the hotel doesn't supply a kettle and you like a cup of tea/coffee before you go out for the day or don't want room service.
I've always bought kettles in the past but the last plastic one i bought in Bali went on the blink pretty fast and had to buy another one which i gave away at the end of the trip.
Kettles can take up a bit of space in your luggage if you are travelling around and in comparison a water boiler immerser is much smaller and could be used again and again on future trips.
If you are interested in buying one they sell for about a.u. $24.95 -29.95
You'll need an electrical adaptor - is that what they're called?- for the country you are in.
