We have had that situation now with three elderly pets - all very loved members of our family - and while the moment of saying goodbye was heart-wrenching, I am glad now that we were able to know (without words, from them) when the time was to let them go. (I found myself asking how we cannot let our own relatives make that decision too - it seems so logical when you have experienced it with a pet who is beyond help).
As for ashes - for many years I had no idea what I wanted done with my own remains one day. Last year, though, one of my daughters jokingly asked what I wanted done with my ashes and all of a sudden I knew. "Take them to Bali" I said - and I knew instantly that was the right place for them as in my heart Bali is my 'second home' and I know the Balinese will understand about something as important as a last resting place.
