Do you know that you can travel Adel/Darwin with QF for $201! You may think the times are inconvenient (arrive Dwn approx 1.30 am) but when you consider that Garuda flies out of Dwn to Bali early next morning and you're in Bali at 9am, it's not a bad option. Depends on what personal cost you put on convenience. Dwn/Bali return anywhere from $500-800.
By the way Adrian, my stopover in Perth on the way back to Adel is 90mins, so it sounds like the 5 1/2 hours you were quoted is at the travel agents convenience.
I live in Alice Springs and am familiar with travel from both Adl & Darwin. Spare a thought for us here, we have to fly at least 2 hours to get to an international departure port.
Where there's a will theres a cheap airfare.
