I have taken a few newies on a day trip to the area.
You start by leaving Legian area about 11 or 12.
Takes about 30 mins to get to Nusa Dua for a drive thru and look. Stop at geger Beach for lunch. Lovely clean surf beach with terrific warung on the sand. Next stop, Uluwatu temple on the south coast of bali, on the cliffs edge. There are monkeys there too.
Next, call in and have a look at Dreamland area, surf beach etc. Next to GWK cultural park. Look at the fantastic planning that went into digging out the sandstone and leaving the areas with monsterous blocks seperating ampitheatres etc. The two statues, about 20m high each (my guestimate) are awesome. You can have dinner in the lovely deMiMidi restaurant or head back to Jimbaran Bay and eat beachfront as the sun sets, (if its open again) or back to Legian area for dinner.
Another area to visit on the way there is the Jimbaran Bay fish market area. The boats come in during the morning and there is a local fish market. Not many tourists there by a huge array of fish for sale, undercover, as well as some other local produce and wares.
