ticket in Indonesia. I did my ticket in Thailand on Koh Samui but I've dived quite a bit on Lombok and my partner did his course with a dive school on the gilis. In comparison with Australia the course is cheaper, the groups are smaller and the dive conditions are much less stressful for beginners. Its also more convenient to be able to do the whole course in a block rather than doing it weekend by weekend. With regards to safety, open water diving in the shallow water like you mostly have in Indonesia is all but fool proof. IMHO, even if you were unlucky enough to end up with a dud instructor, so long as you can swim and have no medical issues theres not a lot that can happen to you.
