Grandad is obviously more fearful for himself - than for you, or your son. There are evangelical church groups like that, and I wouldn't want my kids spending three weeks with them either. At least now you know Grandad's weak-spot, think of it like Balinese Hinduism: good and bad in everything and everyone, and do what you belive is right.
