When looking for volunteer work here, please be aware that you will have to be in possession of a work visa. You are not allowed to work on a tourist visa even if it is on a volunteer basis.
If you are caught working you WILL be deported or asked to give someone a cash kick back.
Eight years ago I was living on the beach in Central Sulawesi. One Sunday, a Dutch lass and I saved two young children from drowning.(there were many people watching but we were the only two who could swim).
The following two Sundays I conducted FREE swimming classes at the beach. After the second week of lessons I was visited by the Immigrasi. They demanded to look at my work visa. When they discovered that I did not have one, they demanded money to let me stay in Indonesia. The outcome was that I stopped the lessons and the local people continued to drown. Not a perfect solution but it was the only solution permitted by the local authorities.
