We stayed there a 10 days ago... Did snorkelling a lot.
Stayed in Jemeluk, Bamboo bali bungalows. They offered us a room right on the beach, great views, especially at sunrise time. The room was cosy, but has only fan, big balcony with chairs and tables. 4 people can live there, as the room has two double beds (rather small).
It cost 80 thousands per night (about 9 dollars) including breakfast.
Bamboo Bali also has nice menu, with vegetarian section, prices are low. I loved that place. It's so peaceful and no hassle at all.
I could get my breakfast anytime, even before 7 am. In Kuta I was starving because all the cafes around was not opened before 8 am.
Amed feels like home. I guess it's the best place in Bali for me.

We snorkelled at Japanese shipwreck - it's too small, but has gorgeous coral gardens around it. We also was at Tulamben - 20 minutes on bike, to see Liberty. It's close to the beach and snorkelling is amazing, if good visability provided. You can see very much, though guys on the beach advice to dive there. Diving was cheap, 40 dollars for 2 dives (75 for 2 persons) including equipment.

And we snorkelled at Jemeluk, at the right end of the beach. There is rock, and you can see lot of corals and fish, but coral gardens near Japanese wreck are more colourfil and plentiful.

When we stayed in Kuta after that, we changed the date of flight and flied out earlier because we didn't like Kuta at all. It's too boring for us, anyway.
