I think the biggest problem here is that, as a grandparent, he undermind you as parents. Whether it is Bali or something else, I think you should have a long discussion with him about this.
We too cop it everytime we travel to Bali. The family would much rather us load up the car with our three young children and drive over to see them on a 12 hour road trip (mind you they never seem to make the effort to repay the favour and come over to visit us). I think that at this time of year, they would be more concerned about the government highlighting car accidents and driver fatigue (not to mention the kangaroos, other wreckless drivers etc.) than the travel warnings about Bali.
