I remember leaving Bali and because the Xray machines were down every bag had to be searched, so there was a long queque. An official who was checking bags upbraided the youngys who were dressed in their Bali attire, shorts, singlets and thongs. He said to me that they were disrespectful dressed like that. I said nothing as I did not want to get involved in a stupid argument. It was possible the official in your case had a religious reason for his opinion, possibly he was not Bali Hindu.
