Ask to go to Jalan Hasanudin.
There are about 20 gold / jewellery shops all side by side.
There is no pressure to buy, and gold is sold by the gram.
If you find something you like, get the sales person to write the carat (70% - 80% etc)on the back of their card, and shop around.
If you don't do this, it can become confusing, and hard to find the same shop again.
Prices are about 50% what you will pay for 9 carat rubbish in many Aussie outlets.
You can even barter with old jewellery that you no longer want, as long as they can verify gold content.
The trip will be worth it, in terms of wider choice, and maybe better prices than Kuta / Legian.
