I'm a retired NAUI Instructor Trainer and even though I don't teach anymore, diving is what I do for fun when I can. It helps that my wife shares the fun. On a normal two week trip such as this we would normally dive every second day or so for a total of 10 to 12 dives. On this trip we did about half that many dives just because of the ridiculous prices we were offered. A 'local dive trip' off the east coast of Nusa Dua or the peninsula of Tajung Benoa was priced at US$60 per person for two dives. As diving goes that's not a particularly steep price for a two tank trip but the dive operator took us to dive sites that we could have swum to from shore for the price of a rental tank, except that nobody will rent to you ‘just a tank'. Now, add in the fact that the dive guide is trying to suggest a maximum depth and time of 12 meters and 40 minutes, and you've got a couple of not very happy campers on your hands. I won't argue about the depth. The reef did actually run out after 12 meters, but a time limit of 40 minutes? Oh boy.

We also booked the trip out to Nusa Penida for a day trip. At a price of $120 per head for a two tank trip, we weren't going to book it twice. We were glad we went and were pretty impressed with the over all condition of the reefs there. There were plenty of fish, both in numbers of species and over all numbers including several species that neither of us had ever seen. My wife had never seen sea-snakes before and we saw at least one each day that we went diving.

We did one last day of diving back at Tajung Benoa and called it quits for this trip. Those prices are just plain out of line, for the level of service being offered.
