Also in my 50s. I cannot wait til hubby goes off to surf remote parts of Indonesia so I can shop in Bali when & where I want. Of course I miss him terribly but the shopping makes up for it!! I LOATHE shopping here but in Bali I can do it for hour after hour. Day after day even.
It's just the same as anywhere else - be as careful of your possessions as you would be elsewhere. Shopping is mostly such fun in Bali - but it can also be a pain in the derriere - trust your instincts - if a place doesn't feel good, leave. I recommend taking a cab to Bintang Supermarket & walking down one side of the street towards Seminyak for a while then crossing over & walking back - so many great shops, you can have a break at Mades Warung II then stock up on spices, kopi, drinkies, nibblies etc at Bintang on your way back. So many other great shopping areas, too but that's my fave jaunt.
