I have heard of this charge being levied in other resort hotels (especially in Thailand), and have to say it is one issue that would make me look elsewhere for accommodation.

I have stayed in places that I would not necessarily choose to eat at for that special occasion for whatever reason. What if you had friends staying elsewhere and you all wanted to go out together?? What if you had a very fav. restaruant that you would rather be at for the celebrations??

Also, that price is totally outrageous; even for a gala dinner with entertainment. Do some investigating into their regular prices for b'fast, pool snacks and drinks and if they are all pricey consider staying somewhere else.

You could, as you say, book out for a night. Sounds like a hassle but you could leave the bulk of your luggage in their storage and travel light. Consider it your own form of protest at this restrictive practice.
