Firstly, you've asked us the wrong question about whether you should go or not, as most of us are addicts..LOL
Kuta and Legian are very close together and you can walk from one to the other. From the airport it goes - Tuban, Kuta, Legian then Seminyak. We often walk from Tuban to Seminyak or vise versa, you can walk along the beach or streets. Taxi's are so cheap if you get tired just hail one...
I personally prefer Legian, only because most of ours friends work in that area and it is slightly not as crowded..(slightly..)
Places to stay - you can go on to Mic's site, she lists all sorts of accommodation and has recommendations, pictures and traveller reports, great site, also has street maps, place to visit, restaurants etc...
