it is just a case of getting to know the hawkers in a particular area. If you sit on the beach more days in the same spot, the sellers get used to you and in the end do't bother you at all (after 3 months in Bali I actually had problems trying to *buy* some jewellery - they were all trying to sell to someone else!).

Another tip is to get your massage lady to lay her sarong out right at the top of the beach - if outside the Inna Kuta Beach, just go a bit further up and the other side of the path. The sellers just tend to keep their piles of sarongs/clothes etc here, and so they don't tend to bother you too much.
