we were in Bali in 2005 and 2006, the time before that was 2000. We found in Kuta some shopkeepers/market sellers etc could be a bit desparate for a sale but it did not bother us too much. It was quite a bit different from 2000 there did not seem to be as many street hawkers pushing their wares at you and the streets are a lot quieter. Some market sellers were upset if you did not buy from them if you had bought from one nextdoor. We found the remote sellers were the most desparate, like up at the water falls, volcano, hot springs etc. We plan to go again in Jan/Feb. Have a great time.
We felt quite safe and never felt threatened at all. Mind you we did not go out clubbing down Kuta Square end of town. We did go out every night to resturants.
