I went to Bali for the first [and only] time on my own. I'd only ever been with my wife, but I had sadly lost her the year before and going back to Bali was part of moving on. As we'd always been together, I had never before been approached by a kupu kupu malam.

Anyway, one evening in Tuban, a smartly dressed young woman stopped her motorbike alongside me and asked if I wanted a such-and-such massage [word I didn't know]. I must have been naive, I thought she was just offering a massage!

I told her I didn't want a massage, thanks, so she asked again, stressing it was a SUCH-AND-SUCH massage. I again looked puzzled and told her "No". So she impatiently asked me if I wanted a F***. Well, I didn't, but at least I knew then what she was selling!

So when the next one pulled up alongside, I knew what I was saying "No" to. But, like all good sales ladies, she had a smart come-back line. "But I've got to make a payment on my motorbike." I told a girl I knew working in a nearby shop what she'd said. The shopgirl told me that this lady got 20 guys a night. I thought at that rate she could be making the payment on a Mercedes!

Later on that holiday, I was in Candi Dasa and a young guy I knew and felt I could trust asked me if I could give him a job taking me to Pasir Putih [White Beach] on the back of his motorbike. So I said OK for after lunch. But when I went to meet him, another guy was there and said his brother had something else to do, but he'd take me. I thought he looked younger and maybe a bit wilder than my friend, but didn't want to disappoint him [or myself]. So off we went, with a warning from me "Hati hati, pelan pelan!" No helmets, of course.

The approach road to Pasir Putih quickly deteriorated into a rutted dirt track which felt like we were going over the edge of a cliff. I thought, well, if I'm going to die, I hope it's quick!

A few years before this, my wife and I had got to know a friendly Balinese guy who always seemed to be hanging around on the beach just south of La Lucciola. Then one day he propositioned me for sex. When my wife looked a bit surprised, he said, "That's OK, you can watch!"
