take maybe 20,000 rps, so you can buy a drink, and get a taxi back. That way, when you're walking around astounded, you can't get hassled, or into any trouble. This was the best bit of advice ever given to me on our first trip.
Go and have a wonderful time.
Pack your sense of humour, and remember that this is the reason why you travel
Staying in the Kartika Plaza, I can recommend a couple of good cheap places to shop. The black and white sports shop about 2 or 3 doors down from the Bali Rani doesn't look impressive but is fixed price and run by a wonderful Chinese family Really nice stuff, and cheaper than I can ever haggle for.
Another good place is both Diane and Jenny's shop directly opposite the Green Garden. Tell them that Fiona from the Green Garden with the braids recommended them, and that I said they're both honest.
(Every bit of networking helps)
Make sure you try
Nasi Goring
Ikan Bakaar, if you like fish
Black Rice pudding,
Satay
and all the wonderful fruit juices
and not to forget,....
Bintang!
