Originally, after Independance, when Indonesia was very poor, the Bemo was born.
Up to then, and still in some parts of Indonesia, the Becak is in use; invented by the Japanese who though it shameful that a human should be pulling others along like a horse and invented the aforesaid contraption where the Driver sits high behind two seated pasengers and propels an adapted bicycle.
Eventually Vespas arrived, were attached to the front of a small tray, becoming quickly known as BE-MO which means Becak Bermotor, (Becak with Motor) shortened to Bemo nowadays and covering a multitude of rickety contraptions.
Anyone using one of these nowadays is in serious need of braim tranplant -:))
