Now being an old "Balmain Boy" my preferred sparkling beverage when in Bali comes in a small green 330ml bottle with a name beginning with "B" and like Champagne is best served chilled.

However, friends who accompanied us on a recent trip to Bali are very BIG champagne drinkers back home and encouraged yours truly to partake in the Hatten Wines (hic) Cellardoor (hic) Tour. The winery located in Sanur is open from 10am - 6:30pm Monday - Saturday.

I must admit I came away with a very different perspective (and very wobbly legs I can tell you). I have since changed my view of wine and particularly sparkling varieties which I once thought were something that should be used only to dress a nice garden salad.

Hattens have been making wine in Bali since 1994 from grapes grown in North Bali and have 2 "sparkling" varieties in their stable.

One is a sparkling Rosé called "Jepun" which is a Balinese word meaning "Frangipani", (it just so happens to be the name of my favourite restaraunt in Sanur) anyway back to the wine..... "Jepun" is made in the traditional Méthode Champenoise way (done by hand)and has a distinctive tropical fruity flavour.

The other is a more traditional sparkling white called "Tanjung" and is also made in the traditional Méthode Champenoise way. Prior to corking a "Liqueur d'expédition" is added which means that a mixture of very pure cane sugar and wine blend is added to the new wine for a correcting effect so in essence "Tanjung" should be classified as a "Brut" that has the aroma of citrus peel and flowers.

As I said at the beginning, wine is not my cuppa tea (figuratively speaking of course) so I apologise to any wine buff or connoisseur who is reading this rambling, and whom may be contemplating a critic posting (or in layman's terms..... a flameout).

Here endeth the lesson......Enjoy !
Cheers
Don
