As posted by Smithers, Champagne is expensive here. You will indeed be pushing to get a bottle for under $50 AUD. However if you are talking about "sparkling wines" this is a different matter. A cheaper way around it is to buy the normal wines (These are a blend of Australian wine and local produce) you can then give the wine a dash of Bali Soda. This is a bottled sparkling soda. Unless your wife is an absolute champagne buff she will not know the difference.
Slip out to the kitchen and try this for yourself right now. If your darling springs you drinking, you can always say "I am just doing this for you, love"
