We have just come back and used our Bankwest Debit Card in the ATM's in Bali (as we discovered the normal Bankwest ATM cards don't work over there...lucky we had the debit card!) We did use it as a 'credit card' a couple of times too without any problems.
You may want to tell her that we could only seem to use at certain ATM's though - we had a bit of a panic initially when would not work at the first couple we tried (Peramata etc) - but had no problems with any BCA ATM's and the Commonwealth Bank one on Legian Street.
