I often drive from Sanur to Lovina. The direct route is straight over the mountains through Bedugul. However I would suggest that you try the longer route via the east coast. This road is no where near as busy and the scenery is bloody brilliant.
With this you head up to Candi Dasa. Maybe call into Padang Bai on the way. This will take you around 2-3 hours from Kuta, depending on stops.
Maybe have lunch in Candi Dasa and then head to Amed via Amlapura and the Water Palace. Stop for the evening in Amed. This is only another 2 hours from Candi Dasa.Of course it depends on the number of stops that you make. Amed is a very quiet but beautiful spot.
In the morning head along the north coast until you arrive in Singaraja.(You don't have to get lost once you are in Singaraja, but I always seem to manage it)Then make your way to Lovina. This is again only about 3 hours driving.
By going this way you will have to benefit of driving on roads that are not really busy. Plus you will see some very beautiful spots. Cheers Ron.
