Ulawatu is a comfortable drive from Sanur, perhaps 45 minutes (maybe a little less).
Don't take a cab, use a driver and negotiate the price, around Rp 150K-250K and they will wait for you.
Watch the monkeys, they can be a bit aggressive, make sure there is nothing they can snatch, I watched one last week destroy a woman's fan, sitting on the wall shredding it.
As for accommodation in Sanur, so many choices, really it come down to how much budget you have. When are you going? That will affect price and availability, it's busy season right now.
Around the area (south Bali) there is not really a lot to see, Ubud is a better location to travel from, central Bali and parts of the coast are spectacular.
It's a short trip so you do need to plan a bit, what would you like to see?
