The Masa Inn is definitely worth considering - very reasonable for what you get, and you should be able to just walk in and get a room (or ring ahead if you want to be sure). Also, it's in a great area with lots of young people round (Poppies 1 is where I always stay, as there are lots of good restaurants and it is both close to the beach and the main nightlife along Jl Legian). Another alternative, which is also slightly cheaper, is La Walon Bungalows next door - this is my personal favourite as I find that it has a bit more character than Masa, but both are good. You should be able to pay single room rate at these kind of hotels.
You won't have any trouble having fun on your own - Indonesia is the kind of place where it is impossible to be lonely. Wherever you go, locals will want to talk to you and find out about you. If you feel like being sociable, the best thing to do is to head down to the beach late afternoon and have a beer at one of the beach eskies... they will pull up a chair on the sand for you, and everyone has a chat while enjoying the sunset.
