I know this is a Bali forum so I hope I don't get flamed for this but just wanted to make a couple of comments as food for thought. I've travelled to both Bali and Fiji and though I like Bali a lot and am going back there next March, having scored some cheap tickets thanks to Jetstar, just wanted to put a quick plug in for Fiji.
Fiji is a genuinely poor country, perhaps poorer than Bali in many ways but very rich in natural beauty and in the beauty of its culture and people, if you get away from the corporate-run resort islands and into the 'real Fiji' such as the island of Taveuni, where we went. The 3rd largest island in Fiji, Taveuni is heartstoppingly beautiful, with the world's third largest pristine never-logged rainforest and some of the best snorkelling and diving on earth. The visibility of water in the Somosomo Strait can be up to 150 feet! Culturally Taveuni is remarkable for boasting according to those who've studied it, the finest singers and musicians in the Pacific - the harmonies of the people singing have to be heard to be believed. The other great value of travelling in Fiji is being exposed to Pacific culture, not only Asian cultures, as we are in Bali, Thailand, etc.
The point I really wanted to make in the context of this forum though is that even though indigenous Fijians are really poor, it really struck me that there was absolutely no begging and no hawking - they are so friendly they make the Balinese seem positively aloof but they never never pressure. It was a relief, to be honest, and not a side of Bali I'm looking forward to reexperiencing. Fiji is really worth a try too, especially if you really love natural beauty and swimming and snorkelling. It is not really a shopping destination though.
