I travelled with my step son in February to Bali. We have different last names and at no time was I asked anything about him. I do not have any legal status over him as his father and I split 7 years ago. I believe as long as the 15 year old has a passport everything should be ok.
If you would like further reassurance ring the airline, take a letter from the parents. The way I look at it you are related.
