Since posting the story and photos of our 2006 holiday (at the link below if you haven't already been there) several people have e-mailed asking for details of the computer we bought for the orphanage.
It was purchased for us by Haaris of the Bali Cyber Cafe from Bio Computer in the Rimo centre in Denpasar, at 112B Jl Teuku Umar [Ph (0261) 229 742]. for Rp2,850,000 which sounds a lot but is really only about Aus$420, and at that price it's almost tempting to bring one home especially since I priced just a CPU box for my daughter recently at over twice that cost.
The main board is an Asus running a Pentium Celeron chip with a speed of 2.1Ghz (I hope I'm interpreting the sales docket properly) with 256 Mb of memory. The HDD is a Twinnos 40Gb turning at 7200 rpm. There is a Samsung FDD and a Panasonic CD RW (52x32x52) and a 10/100 Lan.
The monitor is a 15" Futura and there is a PS keyboard and optical mouse. There are also twin speakers, a mouse mat, a dust cover and a Stavolt power stabiliser which is highly desirable given Bali's unstable power supply.
Software ? Well this is Bali you know. What do you want loaded onto it? I'm sure that will be no problem.
The machine will do all of the orphanage's administration tasks with ease as it would in a school or in private home with a secondary or tertiary student.
All this for $420 !!
Why not?
