I can really sympathise. I came in from Denpasar on Thurs morning at 6 am. Via Melbourne - to Sydney. Quick flight from DPS - 5 hours - great movie, Maggie Smith, Kristen Scott-Thomas, and Rowan Atkinson. Can't tell you the name. but it was great.
As you say - nobody to direct transit passengers at Melb airport. The customs man told me how to get to the domestic departures. I must have checked in for my 9 am flight at about 6.45. Gate 24.
Well Gate 24 is at one extreme end of one wing of the airport. Waiting.....waiting.....waiting. As you say, ice on the wings delaying many flights. My flight not mentioned. In the end about 8.45 I go to ask. She looks horrified at me and says Gate TWELVE (my boarding pass says 24).
So with my backpack weighed down by 3 books, two litres of vodka, one change of clothing and a partridge in a pear tree, I take off for gate 12 which is at the extreme other end of the other wing of the airport. I am hampered by Ubud Knee ( but at least not any more by Ubud Calves) which causes me to hobble, rather than run. As soon as I get to the other wing of the terminal I hear them paging me URGENTLY and I am thinking oh I don't believe this I'm going to miss the flight after waiting nearly 3 hours.
Well I did make it but I had to make so much effort that my breath was rasping so much in my throat that I coughed all the way to Sydney. I am still a bit hoarse. It would have been quite helpful if they'd announced the change of gate.
