I am doing the same. Domestic to Sydney then International to Bali. I have been told that you do not have to worry about luggage as it will be transferred to the International flight, also that you will be issued with Boarding passes when you book in at Melbourne. The only worry is that the Domestic terminal and International terminal are on opposite side of Kingsford Smith, but my son assures me that you can catch a shuttle bus from one to the other.
