Hi RB2,
Like you we have also enjoyed holidays in Phuket, which like the people is so relexed. We have never felt hassled while walking along the footpaths of Patong, not even by the timeshare people.
So why Bali? For us it is the breathtaking scenery of the terraced rice paddies, with every hue of green imaginable. While every bend in the road bringing a new vista into view to mesmerise your eyes.
Men carrying brooms or woven baskets on their shoulders as they walk to their point of sale. The people who are busy in the rice paddies, but not to busy to share a smile. The many villages and their people going about their daily lives. For example, an elderly man who points to a little one and says with pride and a beaming smile, my grandchild. While in another village a neighbour watches with parental concern as a tourist gives a gift to a child, who is returning home from school. Unfortunately not all tourist have good intentions. But the child's smile and aknowledging nod from the neighbour is appreciated, for this could be your child or grandchild. How do you measure the values of a village community?
Ladies in traditional dress making their way to the local temple. All of which has a timelessness of tradition and way of life that continues to exist, despite the pressures of tourism.
No, this is not the laneways of Kuta or Legion, but the Bali that we choose to visit. Now you must choose which door to open, to what entices you to your island dream.
I've just closed my eyes and entered into my dreamtime,
Bro Ken
