As we'd booked a ‘Bali on any budget' package via the Flight Centre, it's difficult to separate the hotel prices from the flight etc... so probably best if I quote the whole deal.
For two of us it was AU$2830 (flights ex Syd, 11 nights inc. breakfast in a standard room, extra-late checkout, transfers). This was around $600 more than the same deal at the ‘Fourteen Roses' hotel in Kuta on the ‘twice as good' offer (that we'd also been quoted on).
Check out the Bali on any budget website... from memory the Mercure was around AU$43 p/p including breakfast and with a stay 10 pay 5 kinda deal.
We'd chosen the Mercure as, being our first trip, it was something of a known quantity. We'd hoped that being Advantage Plus members would have a positive effect on meal prices, possible upgrades... but this was not the case. Also, prices to book via Advantage Plus were not economical.
The upsides:
- The staff (as we've reported) were just fabulous. Nothing was too much trouble.
- Location, location, location. Close to everything we wanted.
- Loooved the breakfast buffet! Plenty of choice (just like any Accor in Aus, but more variety).
- The two evening meals we had there were fantastic. Not cheap by Bali standards - but fantastic.
- It was quiet and peaceful during our stay (in 17/07 - out 28/07).
- The infinity pool is lovely and relaxing. No swim up bar, but not a prob for us.
- The aircon was always soooo cool (and housekeeping never turned it off).
- Everything was efficient and effortless - check-in, check-out, accessing the safety deposit box, moneychanging.
- Staff attended to the only problem (blocked loo, courtesy of Pieboy) immediately.
- A comfy bed (so important when you get a couple of miles on the clock...).
- Plenty of sunlight in our room (3rd floor, left-side if looking from hotel front).
- Private balcony off our room had a fab view and was a great place to relax.
- The view over the beach - spectacular!!!
The downside:
- Yes, the rooms are not large by Asian standards (nor are Mercures in Aus) but we spent little time in the room.
- Bathrooms are, in our opinion, poorly designed ( but huge bath, great water pressure in shower).
- Not a lot of storage space (but suitcases fit under the bed) and no drawers.
- Prices at the day-spa were prohibitive (but plenty of reasonable ones close by).
- Internet connection speed was pretty ordinary.
As reported earlier, we had a polite grizzle about the first room we were allocated - on the Hard Rock side (right side, looking from front) and were moved straight away. That room was much darker, and we'd read on the forum that the Hard Rock noise was a bit much - so well worth the whinge!
Definitely more of a couple hotel than for families. And not recommended for ragers or those with a preference for resort accommodation.
But for us... it was perfect! We'll definitely stay there again on our next trip.
Cheers,
Mrs Pie :-)
