From a fellow 50 yr old couple - eating drinking and relaxing are exactly what one does in Candi Dasa. There is good accommodation for all budgets and you will find plenty of recommendations here on the forum. We stayed at Kelapa Mas last time, around 150,000Rp, simple but comfortable, on the waterfront and in a palm plantation. Great place to have a duty free rum and watch the fishing boats coming home at sunset. Also served very tasty food and the staff were wonderful (as is often the case when you have plenty of time to get to know the locals). Ask Nengah to take you on some local tours to beaches and paddy field walks - he is a great young guy who doesn't hassle at all but helps you explore and find out so much at your own pace.
This year we are going to try Kubu on the hill-side of the street after reading all the glowing reports. Have also stayed a few times at the Rama Ocean View which has a great waterfront pool - a bit out of town but its a pleasant walk.
There are plenty of bars and restaurants and no problem finding ambience and good food, local style or 'international'.
We have been going to Bali since 1979 and I would not even think about a trip without including Candi Das.
