Hey there carolined,
You are probably better off going this way. Ubud first so you can do a few day tours to Kintamani, Bedugul etc. Then the trip north to Lovina followed by a drive along the north east coast to Candi Dasa. You will be following a more circuitous route this way, finally ending up in the southern touristy area. As for where to stay around there, it is dependant upon what you are after. Sanur is very quiet, Kuta is over the top. Legian and Seminyak are places where you can have a quiet time but are close enough to some bars and restaurants that you can have a rage if you wish. Lots of choices.
