Is it possible that your remark "should I be confronted with any idiots or people who think it's their right to lay their seat in the lap of the person behind - then they will have a very sore head to remember me by" is typical for Australian (as opposed to your remarks that Vonda is un-Australian)? If you should happen to even touch me on a flight, I would tell the captain and I am sure the welcome comittee in Bali would be the Police, to return you to your port of embarcation.
If the airline has decided that the recline is OK, then it is OK as normally the recline is not that wonderful in cattle class and in Business/First class there is lots of space for such.
If everyone uses the recline mechanism, then everyone is comfortable. Do you mean that you, yourself, are going to sit completely upright through the whole flight, even when you want to sleep? Well, I wonder.
