you can leave your passport in the hotel safetey deposit box with your still to be exchanged money. Travellers cheques require you to show your passport. I take my cards and leave them in the box as well, unless needed. I wouldn't be carrying around $2000 in cash thats for sure, and nor would I lkike to loose my passport.
