I think the attitude to handicapped kids/adults is one of those things you find out along the way after you've gone through the. "Oh my God the Balinese are not perfect after all" phase which follows on the heels of the "The Balinese are all perfect" phase and coincides with the end of the "all Javanese are bad phase." Luckily about this time you find that you still love them imperfections and all, rather than being "in love" with a fantasy stereotype!!!
I am currently wondering what the next phase will be.
A friend of mine from Kintamani was very worried during her last pregnancy because she was very big and afraid it may be twins. She explained to me that while same sex twins would be fine, boy girl twins would not and would result in shame and she would have to return to her village where the children would keep a low profile. The best I could understand from her explaination was that boy/girl twins are considered to have commited some kind of spiritual incest.
It's a journey of discovery isn't it? Of course they find many of our ways and beliefs as strange as theirs'.
