when people have such different feelings about things.
Denpasar is an essential part of our Bali experience.
I don't so much notice the smells, as enjoy the local bustle in the market place.
I wouldn't recommend it to everyone, but I always drive, and have sussed all the parking spots, and how to get around.
Just crossing the road can be a hasstle until you master the art of walking blindly in front of oncoming traffic, waving a magic paper or downward waving hand as a "safety barrier".
These days, Denpasar is VERY busy, but again, this (for us) adds to the hype.
There are many interesting shops, not tourist oriented, and nice little bakeries and small warungs. It is not a place for sitting on the foot path having a Bintang!
I would try to get him there, and as for the markets, try to stick with the Kumbasari (sp?) side, which is all cloth, carvings, ceremonial stuff etc.
The smelly part is the other side of the river, where the food, fruit and flowers are (hope the wind is blowing the right way)
Close by is Jalan Hassanudin, the gold street.
Fascinating to see mostly locals buying 70 - 85% gold by the gram either for baby, girlfriend or as a hedge against capital errosion - worth a browse.
If you get a driver / guide from Kuta or Legian, he will know the places, and will keep the annoying local "tour guides at bay".
Good luck.
