don't worry about the taxi ride from the airport at all. You buy a pre-paid docket from a little kiosk to the left after you exit the terminal and they are all above board.
You don't say which country you are flying from but if you are paying Visa on Arrival pay in a large denomination note of your currency and you will get the change in Rupiah and therefore have enough to pay for your taxi docket.
If you are taking a cash card with you there are ATMs at the airport also.
The thing is with Denpasar airport it is actually closer to south Kuta than it is Denpasar. You don't say how old your are but if you are young you may want to read a lot of JBRs on this site to find a hotel where plenty of younger people stay and that way you will never have to be alone except if you want to be.
