Won't go through everywhere we shopped whilst there because in a month I did a LOT of shopping!!! My must do shopping list is now as follows:
Dianne's shop (opposite the Green Garden Hotel on Jl Kartika Plaza)- surf brand knock-offs -she had men's denim shorts (100,000 per pair for size 38) as well as a good selection of T-shirts (35,000 for XL, 30,000 for L) & a little bit of better quality kids' stuff, but you've got to ask for it.
Jeny's shop (down the laneway just south of the Ramada Bintang, right down the end nearest the beach) - here we got more surf brand knock-offs: ladies singlets & t's (some small enough for our 10 year old daughter, who's a very slight build - 25,000ea); different men's t's (also 35,000ea) to what Dianne had and the standard looking beaded thongs (just 20,000 in large sizes, kids' sizes 15,000!).
The 2 Ketut's Shop (in the first little Gang on the right hand side as you head north into Garlic Lane, Legian, at the end of the lane) - again, copy t's, but different to those available at Dianne's and Jeny's (also 35,000 for XL).
Iwan Collection (just a couple of doors towards the beach from Indo National on Jalan Padma, Legian) for custom made split sole dance shoes @ 210,000 (didn't try to get his price down, as this seemed very good to me). Fitted perfectly & very very soft leather.
Two dance wear shops with loads of good quality pants & a smaller selection of tops are within a few doors of eachother on Jl Legian- Ariono (Jl Legian Kaja No 456 & Jl Legian Tengah No422 - ph755191 / 768415 / 761998) and just a few doors further south, John Fashion. We bought really great quality dance pants for 180,000 & fully sequinned tops for 140,000.
Matahari's for Sheets & Revlon - Fabulash Waterproof Mascara for 55,000, Colorstay Foundationf for 90,000 and blush for about 70,000. I also got some beautiful Italian 310 thread count sheets on sale there - they are just gorgeous! For a king sized fitted sheet set (including pillow cases & bolster covers) and a super-king sized doona cover with bolster & pillow cases, it came to AU$114. Absolutely amazing price for such great quality!!!
Supernova (ask any taxi driver - it's at the back of Kuta) - great, super-cheap school supplies & stationery upstairs, and they also sell Autan Repel Cream which is no longer made in Australia (they still make the aerosol & pump sprays).
OK, now for the scam that we encountered. It occurred at Centro department store, which I didn't buy much at despite looking thoroughly through most departments, because it's overpriced in my opinion. Anyway, I found a good buy in some pillowcases that were on sale, I openned the packets & checked them out & decided to buy them. Whilst I was putting them back in the packs one of the staff asked if I wanted them & wrote me out a receipt for me to take to the cashier. She took them from me & I went on looking for a while longer before going to the register to pay. When I got to the register they were in a bag, I paid & off I went. It wasn't until I was packing the bags as we were about to head to the airport that I decided I should leave the packaging behind (I was that desperate to get the luggage weight down!), so I pulled the "2-packs" of pillowcases open to find, Yes, just one pillowcase in each of 2 packs, along with several sheets of folded cardboard tucked in amongst the folds (the other 2 packs still had 2 cases in each). I'm guessing that a couple of the staff members slept very comfortably that night on their brushed cotton pillowcases!!! If I hadn't have openned each pack myself before buying them, I would have assumed that they possibly were missing before I picked up the packages off the sale table. But, as I'd openned & checked them I knew that it'd happenned between me looking at them & paying for them. Had to laugh, what else could I do? They were still an OK buy, but I'll be checking things a lot more carefully everywhere that they use this double-handling system, even Mataharis' where I've shopped heaps & never encountered this sort of thing. Caveat Emptor, as they say! Cheers, Sue.
