I don't think you should feel so apologetic. I have had the same warning from a Bali friend. There are lots of things that can and do happen in countries around the world and Bali is no different. Some people do not like to see that even in the paradise that we call Bali things are not always nice. I love Bali and most of its people but I go there with my eyes wide open but always optimistic and ready to engage and trust. As with all travel, know your rights, don't take unneccessary risks and have a great time
