I have not taken my own gear as I always think I don't want to lug it around with me..but I agree with all the posters here...next time I will bring my own mask etc and just rent the flippers...for all the same reasons everyone mentions here..love those tropical snorkelling experiences..what a world under there..also recommend everyone take the time and go to Menganan Island and stay in Pemuteran at Aneka Bagus or any of the hotels up there.
We have been twice and I would say it is the best and I mean the best snorkelling I have ever done in my life...before I would say Candidasa was but this was better than there and Amed and Gili Trawangan by far! Really fun and worth the effort of getting to Pemuteran. Hire a driver and they will come back 2 days later for you. You need to stay 2 nights and go out once. It takes 20 minutes to get to the part to leave and 30 minutes by wooden boat..we even saw dolphins in the distance while we were in the water.
That said I also loved snorkeling at Candidasa so if that is the destination you won't regret that eirther,,but if time do both.
