If you would like a good guide to Tenganan, rather than just going there and taking your chances, ask around Candi Dasa for Komang, who will probably be working in one of the restaurants as a waiter. He is a man of the village and his mother weaves double ikat material on a hand loom, whilst sitting on the floor. He'll take you to his home and introduce you to his family. Tell them Rex and Emiko say "Hi".

A great day out is to go up the coast road past Ujung water palace to Amed [which is really a string of coastal villages along several kilometres]. Very undulating. The first village you come to of any size is Lipah. Good snorkeling straight off the beach right in front of Vienna Beach Hotel. [Sometimes varies with the tide and weather conditions, hope you're lucky]. Plenty of warungs, we generally favour WaWa WeWe.

Then back down the inland road past Tirtagangga water palace and some amazing mountain and rice terrace scenery. I recommend Candi Dasa driver Wayan Manek [Nick] ph 081 8353501.

We usually eat at inexpensive warungs, Warung Puspa in CD main street and Warung Pini near Resor Prima. Legends Cafe and Iguana have bands on non-conflicting nights. Versatile and not too loud.

Pasir Putih is a beatiful white sand beach not far north of CD. The first time I went was on the back of a local guy's motorbike. The last bit of track is like going over the edge of a cliff, but the locals know what they are doing.
